In practice, it shifts the entire centre-of-gravity calculation. On an overhang, gravity pulls a climber off the wall and the arms do the work of staying on. On slab, gravity pulls a climber into the wall, but at an angle that constantly threatens to slide the feet off the holds. The body has to stay out, away from the surface, hips forward — a posture that feels deeply wrong to anyone whose muscle memory was built on juggy overhangs.
Why experienced climbers struggle more than beginners ¶

Pretner's reasoning is deliberate: introducing slab before climbers have fully committed to strength-led movement means the habits form in parallel rather than in sequence. Beginners work traverses at low height, moving laterally across the slab without topping out, which removes any summit-oriented anxiety and keeps attention on the feet. The longer argument for keeping slab in the gym ¶

Slab is none of those things. It is quiet, incremental, and rewards internal attention over external spectacle. Several gyms that opened in the mid-2010s dropped slab almost entirely from their floor plans in favour of maximising overhang square footage. The argument for keeping it — for building it into a facility the way Brook Crest Path has, with dedicated space and dedicated programming — is that it produces more complete climbers. The 85-degree wall is not the most used surface in the gym on any given Saturday afternoon. But the climbers who return to it regularly, who treat it as a practice rather than a problem to be solved once and abandoned, tend to be the ones whose movement quality on every other surface in the building improves most consistently over time.
The slab does not reward effort in the way a hard overhang does. There is no pump, no dramatic throw, no moment of obvious physical conquest. What it offers instead is a more precise kind of feedback: the foot either holds or it doesn't, and the reason it doesn't is always knowable.
